Glass vestibule door openings and framed door portal design considerations

The design of all glass vestibule is unique to other glass structures, in that they include integrated walls, door portals, roofs and even canopies. At times, these systems are anchored to the base building structure, but just as often, they need to be designed to be self-supporting. Glass Vestibule door openings, in particular, can require self-supporting design based on surrounding materials and conditions, door types, electronics, and roof load. Reference

In order to keep the structure as light and visibly transparent as possible, door openings with a simple door header and sidelites are often preferred to framed and clad portal structure. The design of the doors themselves can play a role in which components to choose for the opening:

Frameless glass doors

Frameless doors provide the lightest aesthetic overall, and can usually be anchored with simple patch fittings that attach to the header and sidelites. They do come with some important considerations, however:

  • They require a gap of approximately 3/16” on all sides, which can allow air, water and dust inside. Options are limited for door sweeps and weatherproofing with acceptable aesthetics. See more about how to address this issue in our post on all glass vestibule conditioning.
  • A frameless door and portal offers limited options for automated openers, typically requiring floor mounted equipment, which is more vulnerable to dirt and water infiltration along with other environmental issues.

Glass patch fittings in doors provide much better options for weatherproofing, but of course they are not as light aesthetically.

Framed glass doors on a glass vestibuleThe glass doors at the portal on the CD Adapco headquarters building use simple patch fittings attached to the header and sidelites for a light aesthetic.

Floating headers

A floating header, which spans the door opening and anchors to the sidlites, can work with both door types, while providing a lighter look than a fully framed opening, with room for openers and associated electronics.

Glass Vestibule with Floating Header Door Portal, St. Josephs A simple header tube was used at this portal within the entrance wall of St. Joseph’s Drexel Library. Wiring for electronic openers, and strike plates for panic handles could be hidden with the header, to keep the opening relatively light and clean looking. The glass lites above the door opening are supported by floor to ceiling glass fins, and not the door opening itself.

Portal structure

The key design consideration in determining whether or not a structural portal is needed, is whether or not the opening must be self-supporting. In other words, when the door opening must support the load of the materials above (wall/framing/roof), a structural portal of one type or another (steel, aluminum, stainless steel, etc.) is needed to prevent loads from above from compromising the operation of the doors. Sizing the appropriate structural members is based on the width of the door opening, the weight of the load being supported, and the locations of where loads are being transferred to.

Glass vestibule with framed structural portal, WistarThe framed portal at the Wistar Institute provides a dramatic stainless clad opening. This type of framed structural portal can provide the best weather seal at the doors, while also supporting structural loads above.

Initial design strategy recommendations

All glass vestibules are more about designing a signature look at the entrance than anything. Therefore, Bellwether recommends that the design process begin with conceptual aesthetic requirements, and then followed by an analysis of space, access (door opening size, electronics, etc.) and weatherproofing considerations. Once critical aesthetic and access requirements are set, a structural analysis can be undertaken to determine the options that will place the fewest limitations on each.

Modular kitchen system M-System.

M-System is a modular kitchen system with a robust, professional look. The modules and devices have the class of Italian design, but are remarkably low-priced. In addition to a lot of modules, M-System also offers a full range of built-in appliances.

Trend towards individual modules

M-System responds to the growing demand for separate modules. With the design modules, refrigerators, rear walls and extractor hoods, everyone can easily put together his or her ideal kitchen.

A nice extra is that the modules are placed separately and can therefore be perfectly taken along with any move.

Once you have decided which modules from the M-System you prefer, it is enough to purchase a few more kitchen cabinets and complete the kitchen. The equipment that is integrated in the M-System is of excellent quality and offers everything the user requires from his or her kitchen equipment. On the website and in its catalog M-System gives some examples of compositions.

Also in existing kitchens

In addition, you can use only one or two modules in a new or an existing kitchen. For example, less stainless steel will be used in the kitchen and the design will change as a result.

The different modules

The modules and elements from which you can choose are as follows:

60 cm modules

Sink unit and work tables with open shelves or drawers (with or without solid wooden top).

70 cm modules

Gas cooker, refrigerator module, oven module, dishwasher module and combi-microwave oven / dishwasher module.

90 cm modules

Hob module on gas or ceramic hob, gas cooker, sink unit and work tables with open shelves or drawers (with or without solid wooden top) and oven module.

120 cm module

Equipped with multifunction oven, 5-burner cooking area and 2 × 30 cm storage cupboards.

Decorative extractor hoods , with or without rear walls; and island hoods .

Accessories such as wall stitching boards (to fill in an empty piece of wall where no wall units are planned, decorative and functional) and luxury taps .

WHY BUY A MODULAR KITCHEN?

There are many advantages in opting for a modular kitchen rather than all other options mentioned in my previous post. This post is to list out a few;

After many years of kitchen usage, some units may have more wear and tear (like the sink unit due to water leakage, dampness etc). In a real Modular kitchen, those cabinets or panels can be replaced with minimal disruption. Once it is done, the kitchen might look as good as new.

In a modular kitchen, the raw material which goes into the making will be of excellent quality. Hence most good brands are able to give guarantee of at least 5 years. Also due to good quality material and imported machinery the final finished kitchen will definitely look superior (both inner and exterior).

While customization, the errors are minimized due to the design software used and technical competency of the designer. Optimal storage is planned and the cabinets are pre-drilled at the factory so the fitting of hardware and accessories will be precise. This will give the kitchen perfect lines between cabinets and makes it to stand out. Also the cabinets will be designed and made accessory friendly, which make it possible to add in future.

Today many are opting for built-in appliances in the kitchen. Each appliance is of different sizes and has ventilation, inlet / outlet requirements. All those factors will be taken into account and manufactured accordingly for hassle free installation and durability of the appliances.

Another feedback recently got from a customer is that due to the perfect fixing of each modular kitchen cabinet, there will not be any crevices and it reduces the chances of cockroaches.

Finally the installation time taken is minimal and site does not get untidy. There will not be any dust, noise, debris etc.

Modular Kitchen - The Flexible and Movable Kitchen

A modular kitchen stands for flexibility. These freestanding kitchens have a simple design and are made up of various ready-made kitchen cabinets and freestanding kitchen accessories. Would you like to know more about the design and layout of a module kitchen? We are happy to tell you in this blog post!

What Is A Modular Kitchen?
A modular kitchen differs from an ordinary kitchen in that it is built with ready-made modules. You can combine these modules according to your own wishes. It is thus possible to arrange a modular kitchen entirely to your own taste and to adapt it optimally to the space in which the kitchen will be located. Not satisfied, are you moving, or simply ready for something new? Then you can easily remodel the kitchen module yourself.

Kitchen Decorating Module
You can design the modular units to your own taste and space. However, a kitchen is of course only complete with the matching kitchen appliances and kitchen accessories!

Modular Kitchen Equipment
The modular kitchen equipment is characteristic of a module kitchen. In general we are talking about freestanding equipment, such as a cool stove. A stove consists of an oven and a hob. This device can also be arranged according to your own wishes. Indispensable is also the freestanding fridge or fridge-freezer combination to store the food. Do you want extra comfort? Then you can supplement the modular kitchen with a freestanding microwave. Handy if you want to heat a snack quickly, but don't want to wait for the oven.

However, the modular kitchen appliances do not necessarily have to be free-standing. You can also opt for specialized units, such as a cooking module or a cooling module. This is a row of ready-made kitchen cabinets with, for example, a built-in oven, built-in hob and / or a built-in refrigerator. Just as handy in assembling as freestanding equipment, and perfect if you don't like freestanding equipment.

Modular Kitchen Accessories
Your modular kitchen makes you complete with modular kitchen accessories. Indispensable in the kitchen are of course the sink and the tap. There are special flush modules for this, or a row of separate kitchen cabinets with a built-in sink and a tap.

There are many practical and modular storage systems especially for kitchen drawers. This allows you to quickly and easily arrange the drawers in a modular way, for example with a special section for pans and a fitted cutlery drawer. As with the cabinet modules, the following applies: not satisfied, just rearrange!

Advantages of a Modular Kitchen
  • Inexpensive kitchen 'tailor-made'.
  • Offers a lot of flexibility.
  • Movable and changeable.
  • To be completed with free-standing devices.
  • Special cooking or rinsing modules available.
  • Can be personalized according to your own taste and space.
  • Purchase Kitchen Module? Pay close attention to this!
  • Think carefully about the design of the modular cabinets. If you get started yourself and buy separate cabinets together, there is a chance that you will find out when installing that the setup is not so useful in daily life. For example, because there are too many drawers and no large cupboards, or because the sink and stove are too far apart.

It is also important to go for good quality. Solid kitchen cabinets are especially important if you plan to assemble and replace the kitchen yourself.

Budgeting your kitchen renovation

It’s never easy to commit to a kitchen renovation. One is always concerned about the noise, disruption and the cost of renovating. While some disruption during the process is inevitable, at least when it comes to budgeting your project we can help. Here are a few tips on how to establish a renovation budget. Reference

Identify what you want to keep
If looking to do the project within a budget one should consider re-using parts of their existing kitchen. Your oven, fridge, chimney and hob could be reused if in proper condition. If you are fine with the location of your water inlets and outlets then you can save on redoing the plumbing, and the same is true for electrical work. You might even consider reusing the original flooring.
Set priorities
What is the goal of the renovation? Do you want to Increase space, change the look and feel, or make it more functional for your changing requirements? Make a priority list of what you care about, this will help you pick and choose tasks when fitting the renovation into your budget.
Modular Kitchen Renovation Cost Breakdown

Most modular kitchen companies will give you a rate that seems quite low, but one must note that they are only referring to the cabinets. When it comes to a holistic budget one needs to consider the cost of plumbing, electrical, tiling, painting etc.
The cost of renovating a typical 8’X 10’ size kitchen with branded materials and midrange specifications should be around Rs. 4 Lacks. The budget break down per task is as follows:
Modular cabinets: 40% (includes good quality hardware, and laminate finish)
Electrical: 17% (includes hob, chimney, fans and geyser)
Plumbing: 11% (includes kitchen sink and faucet)
Tiles: 7% (floor and walls)
Doors and Windows: 12%
False ceiling: 3% (includes recessed lights)
Kitchen Counter: 3%
Misc. civil work: 7% (includes demolition of existing kitchen, waterproofing, painting etc.)
Please note that this budget doesn’t include larger appliances such as a fridge, OTG or microwave oven.
Also it is always advisable to keep an additional 15% of the budget available for unplanned tasks that might come up once your old kitchen is removed.
This basic thumb rule guide should get you on the right track in terms of preparing a budget, you can go high end with your cabinet finishes if your budget allows it, or cut some costs down by choosing not to redo the electricals and plumbing as mentioned before.
And finally to avoid going above budget, stick to the plan
How much extra you spend is completely dependent on you, once you have decided on a reasonable number, stick to it. Making changes through the course of a project leads to cascading budget increases that will surprise you at the end.
Hope these tips help you plan your upcoming kitchen renovation.

Why Should Invest in Architectural Hardware

Select door handles online with filters
To help you choose the right door handle, we have split the entire range of door handles into different groups. You can find it in our left menu, as filters. Think of the finish, color, lifestyle or the brand of the stool. By indicating your preferences via these menus, you filter your choice and find the perfect door handle for your situation. Incidentally, all door handles of the GPF building hardware brand are made of the strong and high-quality basic material stainless steel. The stainless steel may be finished with one of the many finishes.

GPF building hardware: total concept for online and offline
GPF building hardware door handles are part of the GPF CombiVari concept. That is why, in addition to sets, you also see a lot of loose door handles. The models are available separately from the underlying rosette or shield. This creates freedom of choice in putting together a unique set of door fittings. The loose door handles can be freely combined with the rosettes or shields of the GPF building hardware brand. You can even put them together from the comfort of your home, using the online step-by-step plan of the GPF Wizard . In just three steps you have combined your personal wishes with a door handle that suits this perfectly.

Which lifestyle do you go for?
Do you prefer to choose your door handles on emotion - or based on what you have seen in home magazines? Then you can easily find products with the atmosphere of a certain living style through the 'Lifestyle' filter. All door handles are divided into a lifestyle based on material and finish. For example, the black and white door handles connect to the lifestyle 'Modern self-conscious'. A stainless steel door handle with wood fits the lifestyle '30s. The lifestyles help you on your way. They are of course not binding and you can decide which products best suit your style.

GPF BlackWhite: business sporty door fittings for every interior
Our collection of black and white door fittings is expanding! We are happy with that, because the finishes are all-rounders in any interior. You can work with black and white in industrial interiors as well as in modern or rural spaces. The colors form a nice contrast with each other and can therefore also be used well together. Play with black and white in the interior and choose from one of our many stools. The products can be extended with door, window and furniture fittings in the same style.

1930s door handles
A striking lifestyle is the 1920-1930 style. The models within this program have more details than other door handles. They are made up of three parts: neck, middle part and end piece. And here too, there are many options to suit your personal taste. The style of the 1930s door handles is characterized by the combination with a wooden center and the generally shorter models. The XL options, however, keep the choice wide. The GPF building hardware brand only uses real wood for its models. The center piece is available in ebony, cherry, beech and oak with whitewash. An extra dimension to this program is the possibility to order the door handle with a black or white coating.

Classic in a black jacket: wrought iron door handles
There is also plenty of door fittings available for national interiors in our range. Take a look at the lifestyle 'Rural authentic' or 'Charming rustic'. Two similar door handle groups, but each with their own characteristics. The lifestyle 'Rural authentic' contains the products of the Kirkpatrick brand. English-made products, traditionally cast by hand and finished in England. The craft is reflected in the final product, due to the lively structure of the products. The door handles within the 'Charming rustic' lifestyle are from the GPF building hardware brand. These cast iron and wrought iron door handles have a more flat structure than Kirkpatrick's models. Due to their tighter appearance, they fit surprisingly well in a modern interior.

Italian design door handles
The Italian brand Mandelli makes its door handles out of brass. All these door handles are in the lifestyle Italian design. The brass base can be found with every door handle, if desired finished with one of the many strong finishes. We call you (matt) chrome, bronze and PVD ... but there is much more!

Need door handle advice?
All door handles, on shield or on rosette, are supplied with fasteners. Please note that when purchasing a separate door handle, you also buy a shield or rosette, because otherwise the handle cannot be mounted properly. The combination door handle - door handle on a door is not always necessary. You can also choose a doorknob - door handle combination or buy half a pair (one handle or knob). Door handles are fixed on a so-called pin. The Allen screw in the crank must be tightened on / in the pin. Do you have a question after reading this information or seeing all those door handles? We are happy to assist you !
